Patties Recipes From Around The World - Food - Recipes

First of all, what is a pattie or is it a patty and where can you find some great patties recipes?

I don't think anyone is really sure on the correct spelling, but this does not really matter because it is the food that is the most important ingredient here.

A pattie or patty is made with a mashed potato base or a pastry shell. The pastry shell variant can be filled with a variety of fillings which include ground beef, chicken, shrimp or vegetables. The filling is highly spiced with scotch bonnet peppers and curry powder. The pastry shell pattie is then baked in a very hot oven until golden brown.

The potato based pattie can also be mixed with the same fillings, but is normally prepared with tuna, salmon, or crab meat and then shaped into circles, dipped in flour and deep fried.

The origins of pastry patties recipes began in the Caribbean after the migration of slaves from West Africa and have been a staple food in the West Indies for centuries. If you ever journey to the Caribbean for business or pleasure, make sure you find a local pattie shop to try out this delicious soul food.

As well as patties recipes from the Caribbean, the United Kingdom is also famous for some mouth watering recipes. The English pattie is traditionally made with mashed potato and then fried. The origins of the dish were born in the North East of England and Kingston upon Hull is the capital of the English pattie. It is a delightful mix of potato, fish and sage, produced in circles and then dipped in a seasoned batter mix and fried. On a visit to Kingston upon Hull you will find many fish & chip shop takeaways serving pattie butties, which is a fried pattie sandwiched between two thick slices of bread and butter. Maybe not a dish for the faint hearted, bearing in mind the high cholesterol content.

Moving on to the sub-continent, you will find many different patties recipes in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. In these countries they tend to use more variety of spices and you will find the pattie made with a pastry casing or a mix of vegetables, meat and rice dipped in flour and then fried.

In summary, the pattie is a universal dish now found in many countries around the world. They are inexpensive, wholesome, but most importantly, delicious.
