Delectable Food In Barbados - Travel

A famous Spanish saying quotes "The belly rules the mind". Indeed it is true! As for people all over the world, eating or the art of cuisine is such a favorite topic among many since it satisfies our sense of taste.

When we come to talk about cuisine and exotic tropical taste, one place stands out, Barbados. Having a mix of tropical atmosphere and the sweet sense of exotic and mouth watering taste surely gives a whole new definition to dining.

Let me start off by introducing to you the national dish of the famous island. Cou Cou and Flying Fish has made this little Caribbean island stand out among the rest. The first recipe is an exotic and sophisticated blend of cornmeal, okra and tomatoes with an accent of salt, peppers and the famous Bajan hot sauce. Meanwhile, flying fish is abundant in this location since it thrives well among the warm waters that surround the island. This dish is commonly served fried or steamed, depending on your choice.

Fish here in the island is a common choice for food since the place clearly is full of aqua culture resources. People have created and come up with different kinds of recipes that use fish as its main ingredient. Another one of their famous cooking inventions is the Bajan Macaroni Pie and Flying Fish. This unique recipe is the Bajan's own version of Mac and cheese.

This time, let's talk about the famous thirst quencher. It's called the Mauby drink. It's a carbonated drink made from the bark as well as the leaves of a Colubrina arborescence tree. Although there are already a lot of commercialized carbonated drinks in the market out there, Mauby still stands out as a symbol of the Caribbean island's pride. This drink can be of an alcoholic nature as well as a non-fermented drink. It is consumed as a cold drink in most cases. So team up your flavorful meals with this native drink and get to feel the whole tropical experience of being in Barbados.

For those having the notion that food in Barbados are almost all hot and spicy, well, let me enlighten you on that. Actually, not all Barbados food is hot and spicy. As a matter of fact, one of the islands well loved delicacies is coconut bread or sweet bread as what they usually call it. Its flavor and taste is best described by three words, sweet, sweet, and sweet! The bread is accentuated with a bit of coconut filling inside before it is cooked in the oven. While this delicious treat is being cooked, it gives out the aroma of sweetness all over the place. This will surely make you crave for more.

Here's a rare delicacy that would surely give off that exotic taste you have been looking for. Get to experience the local specialty of the island, Sea-Egg. The sea-egg is commonly known as the sea-urchin. This local delicacy is considered rare since harvesting of these eggs is controlled by local government officials due to the depletion of its resources. But don't fret; these exotic eggs are available when they are in season. So if you happen to be in Barbados, don't forget to check out this dish.

When it comes to food, Bajans have been known for two things: alcohol and cake. Rum Cake or also known as Great Cake has been a favorite among the locals of this island. A combination of beer and rum, this dessert would top your great food experience in Barbados.

All these food and delicacies would surely fill you up not only with a satisfied belly, but with a rewarding and complete tropical experience in the island of Barbados.

Ginger In Your Spice Box Is A Medicinal Source In Every Household - Health - Alternative Medicine

Ginger a pungent herb commonly used as a spice and herbal home remedies throughout the world.

Ginger is the root-stock of a plant grown in the East and West Indies, and is scraped before importation. Its odor is due to an essential oil, and its pungent hot taste to a resin.

Young ginger roots are juicy and fleshy with a very mild taste. They are often pickled in vinegar or sherry as a snack or just cooked as an ingredient in many dishes.

The juice from old ginger roots is extremely potent and is often used as a spice to flavor dishes such as seafood or mutton and vegetarian recipes. Powdered dry ginger root (ginger powder) is typically used to spice gingerbread, pumpkin pies and other recipes.

Ginger is also made into candy, is used as a flavoring for cookies, crackers and cake, and is the main flavor in ginger ale -- a sweet, carbonated, non-alcoholic beverage, as well as the similar, but spicier ginger beer which is popular in the Caribbean.

Fresh ginger should be peeled before cooking. For storage, the ginger should be wrapped tightly in a towel and placed in a plastic bag, and can be kept for about three weeks in a refrigerator and up to three months in a freezer.

Ginger historically was called "Jamaica ginger"; it was classified as a stimulant and carminative, and used frequently for dyspepsia and colic. It was also frequently employed to disguise the taste of medicines. Ginger is on the FDA's 'generally recognized as safe' list, though it does interact with some medications, including warfarin. Ginger may also decrease joint pain from arthritis, though studies on this have been inconsistent, and may have blood thinning and cholesterol lowering properties that may make it useful for treating heart disease.

A variety of uses are suggested for ginger. Tea brewed from ginger is a folk herbal home remedy for colds. Three to four leaves of Tulsi (known across South Asia as a medicinal plant) taken along with a piece of ginger on an empty stomach is an effective cure for congestion, cough and cold. Ginger ale has been recommended to settle the stomach. This spice dissolved in hot water was commonly used to avoid cramps. Ginger has been found effective in multiple studies for treating nausea caused by seasickness, morning sickness and chemotherapy.

If a piece of the root is chewed it causes a considerable flow of saliva, and an application of powdered Ginger, made with water into paste, against the skin will produce intense tingling and heat. To which it may be spread on paper and applied to the forehead as a means for relieving a headache. People who suffer from lacking energy or vitality would indigestion a solution obtained by steeping or soaking ginger as a substitute for tea.

Either preparation is of service to correct diarrhea, and to relieve weakly chronic bronchitis. Also as admirably to correct or rectify chronic constipation through general intestinal sluggishness.

Ginger produces clusters of white and pink flower buds that bloom into yellow flowers. Because of its aesthetic appeal and the adaptively of the plant to warm climates, ginger is often used as landscaping around subtropical homes. Organic Spices and Dried Herbs for the Holidays - Health - Alternative Medicine

There are a host of fabulous holidays that occur during the bleak winter months. Although they celebrate in different ways, winter holidays help to bring cheer to what is typically a cold and dark time of year otherwise. Along with favorite holidays come traditional cuisines and dishes that you and your family enjoy, and these can be seasoned well with organic spices and bulk herbs.

Solstice

Pagans celebrate the Solstice, which is the shortest day of the year, because the days will soon begin to lengthen and the sun will come back once again. Winter greenery from conifer trees is used to decorate the home, and the lighted tree used in Christmas festivities stems back to the pagan tradition of lighting a tree on Solstice. In this tradition a yule log is burned on the fire. There is a dessert that resembles the yule log, known as the Buche de Noel. It is a chocolate cake made with wonderful organic spices that is filled with whipped cream, and covered with chocolate frosting that is scored to resemble the bark on wood. Marzipan mushrooms are sometimes put on the Buche de Noel as adornment.

Hanukkah

Hanukkah is a Jewish winter holiday that features the lighting of the menorah, and oil plays a large role in both the menorah lighting as well as foods eaten. A dreidel, a four-sided spinning top, is used in a traditional game. There are a couple of special foods that are eaten during Hanukkah, and they include sufganiyot, or jelly donuts with no hole in the center that are seasoned with bulk spices such as cinnamon and powdered sugar, and latkes, which are crispy potato pancakes. Various dried herbs can be used in making latkes, but onion, eggs and flour are always used.

Kwanzaa

Kwanzaa is a celebration that people of African descent enjoy during the month of December. Culture is reaffirmed with family, and gifts are exchanged. Food is also shared, and culminates with a Kwanzaa feast held on December 31st. Foods feature recipes from the Caribbean, Africa and South America, and can include fried okra, plantains, fried chicken, black bean soup, baked ham and gumbo. These foods favor bold organic spices and dried herbs for appropriate flavorings.

Christmas

Christmas is a Christian winter holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus, but developed its modern-day trappings during the reign of Queen Victoria of England, and through the writings of Charles Dickens. It typically includes a tree with lights and decorations, as well as gifts, and a feast with organic spices and bulk herbs as part of the festivities. Foods eaten as well as organic herbs and bulk spices used can vary, but are traditionally similar to what is served at Thanksgiving, including turkey, mashed root vegetables, gravy, dressings, cranberry sauce and pumpkin pie for dessert. Organic spices such as cinnamon and nutmeg, as well as organic herbs like rosemary and sage figure prominently in these wonderful dishes.

Time To Chill Out and Take It Easy In Barbados - Travel

It is the weekend once again and as most of my readers will be aware, that the weekend means only one thing and that it is time to take things real easy and spend some quality time with the family.

Dont get me wrong I dont take things easy during the week; I work real hard during and put in a 12+ hours a day. Im a firm believer that if you have things that you want to achieve in life that you have to put the effort, time and thought into making those things happen. But I also believe that you have to spend quality time resting and relaxing and enjoying life with your family and friends.

I was going to head to the beach and enjoy my favourite aspect of life on Barbados. For me nothing beats taking things easy at an amazingly beautiful beach and enjoying the warmish waters of the Caribbean Sea or even the cooler waters of the Atlantic Ocean, I dont mind I love them both. It is a wee bit wet today so I will put the beach on hold until another day. That reminds me, I need to get a new boogie board, because of the damage to the last one caused not by sharks, but by my Staffordshire Bull Terrier, that thinks it is protecting me from the Boogie Board.

I have a load of magazines to read and a few board games that the kid loves to play to keep me occupied. I also have one of my favourite cocktail recipes called the Road Runner to try out later when the kid is safely tucked away in his bed, which Im looking to sampling again because it has been a while. I know this cocktail tastes real good, because I have sampled it before back home in Scotland during one of my legendary cocktail evenings.

The Road RunnerIngredients:Amount Ingredient (Click ingredient for more recipes)2 Shots Russian Vodka1 Shot Disaronno Amaretto1 Shot Coconut Cream1 Shot Cream1 Scoop Ice Cream (Vanilla)

16. Consider including a "snow date" on your invitations. If you live in an area that gets a lot of bad winter weather, you might want to add an alternate date for the party, in the event that the forecast is for slippery roads. Raw Food Health Solutions for High Blood Pressure - Health

Raw Foods and the Maintenance of High Blood Pressure

As the demographic profile of the nation changes and more of us are elderly, obese and stressed if the media is to be believed, high blood pressure is going to become more prevalent. So let's take a look at what it is and how we can change our lifestyle and diet to ensure we minimise the risks of suffering from hypertension.

What does high blood pressure mean for you?

Blood pressure is measured by the amount of pressure exerted on the walls of the arteries as the blood moves through them. There are two parts of the measure, the diastolic pressure which is measured from the muscle wall on the right of the heart, (a lower number because the muscle wall is thinner as it doesn't have to pump the blood do far) and the systolic pressure from the thicker wall to the left of the heart. High blood pressure or hypertension is when the blood pressure is 140/90 or above. This means you are at risk of having a stroke or heart disease because your heart has to work harder to pump the blood around the body which can in time weaken it. Also the increased pressure can damage the walls of the arteries which could result in a blockage or cause it to split, either of these can cause a stroke.

How is it Caused?

Although high blood pressure increases with age, other lifestyle factors play a key contributory part. The main cause is obesity because this is often the result of the other factors in high blood pressure which are excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and lack of exercise. Some families may have a history of high blood pressure and for reasons not yet fully understood, families of Afro-Caribbean or Asian origin tend to have high blood pressure.

Changes you can Make to Prevent or Reduce High Blood Pressure

The most obvious change to make if you have high blood pressure is to take more exercise and eat a healthier diet, low fat, low salt and balanced. Thirty minutes of exercise a day, five times a week is recommended for a healthy heart.

Specific Raw Foods you can eat to Prevent or Reduce Blood Pressure

Fruit

* Apple eating 2 or 3 whole apples a day will reduce blood pressure * Fiber * Beans * Peas good example of high fiber food that reduces blood pressure * Garlic typically produces a drop of 20 to 30 points on the systolic and 10 to 20 diastolic
